Tolls classification
Motorway tolls are calculated by multiplying the specific unit rates
for the various sections, approved by ministerial decree, by the
respective number of kilometers travelled. The total of these amounts
is then rounded to the nearest ten eurocents. The unit toll is based on
the characteristics of the motorway topography (flat or mountainous)
and the type of vehicle, according to the classification system
currently in use (Axles - Conformation).
Based on this system, vehicles are broken down into five classes according to the two parameters:
- “Conformation”, i.e. the vehicle height measured at the front axle.
With this criterion all the two-axle vehicles are divided into two
classes;
- “Axles”, i.e. the number of structural axles of the vehicle. With
this criterion, all the vehicles and combinations with three or more
axles are divided into three classes.
Paying Tolls Tolls may be paid in cash only at the booths manned by toll collectors. Payment is also accepted in the principal foreign currencies, though any change may be in euros. On the A4 Turin-Milan, the following currencies are accepted: - Canadian dollar; - US dollar; - Swiss franc; - Danish kroner; - Norwegian kroner; - Swedish kronor; - British pound.
On the A4 Turin-Milan, as on most of the motorway network, it is also possible to pay in forms other than cash. These payment systems are: - il Telepass which can be used at all the tollbooths marked with yellow road markings and signs; - le Viacard in deduction or on current account, can be used at all tollbooths, with collector or automatic; - Accepted Credit Cards (Visa, Eurocard/Mastercard, Aura, American Express, Diners), Postamat and Bancomat Fast-Pay can be used at all tollbooths, automatic and manual.
Toll Collection Motorway tolls can be collected by either the “closed” or “open” systems.
The system is called “closed” when the customer takes a ticket at the point of entry for delivery upon exiting, for determining the toll; the amount is computed on the basis of the class of vehicle and the distance traveled, as indicated by the toll ticket.
In the “open” system of toll collection, each toll station controls a specific section of motorway. At each toll station, customers pay the toll for the section of motorway controlled by that station. A toll ticket is not required in this system, since the toll refers to a fixed distance traveled and only varies according to the class of vehicle.
The motorway toll stations are divided into the appropriate number of booths--manual, free automatic (Telepass and cards) and restricted automatic (only Telepass)--according to the type of users and the available space.
